What to expect from Acupuncture

If you’re new to acupuncture, it’s completely normal to feel a bit unsure about what to expect.

Appointments at Norwich Acupuncture Rooms are calm, gentle and tailored to you. People often come when they’re looking for support with things like fertility, hormones, stress, sleep, tension, pregnancy, aches and pains, or simply feeling run down and not quite themselves.

You don’t need to arrive with everything perfectly explained. We start with a detailed chat and take it from there.

Rebecca and her trusted team are all registered with UK regulatory bodies for traditional acupuncture, ensuring the highest quality and standards. Trained in using Chinese medical diagnostic techniques, such as pulse and tongue diagnosis, your practitioner will create the most appropriate and effective treatment programme for you.

Your first acupuncture appointment

Your first appointment usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.

We’ll talk through your main reason for coming, your general health, sleep, digestion, stress levels, lifestyle, menstrual cycle if relevant, and anything else that feels useful to know.

Traditional acupuncture also uses diagnosis such as pulse and tongue reading. This helps your practitioner build a fuller picture and tailor the treatment to you.

After the consultation, very fine acupuncture needles are placed at specific points on the body. They are usually left in place while you rest quietly.

Many people find the treatment much more relaxing than they expected.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very fine.

You may feel a small sensation as a needle is inserted, or a dull ache, warmth, tingling or heaviness around a point. Many people feel calm and relaxed once the needles are in.

If you feel nervous, please say. We can go slowly, use fewer needles, and talk everything through as we go.

Why people book acupuncture

People book acupuncture for all sorts of personal reasons.

Some are looking for support around fertility, IVF treatment, cycle changes, pregnancy or postnatal wellbeing. Others come because they feel stressed, tense, tired, overwhelmed, uncomfortable in their body, or generally out of balance.

Acupuncture is not a replacement for medical care. Please speak to your GP, midwife or consultant about symptoms that need medical attention, and do not stop prescribed treatment without medical advice.

Fertility support

Fertility is a big part of the work at Norwich Acupuncture Rooms.

People come while trying to conceive naturally, preparing for IVF, going through fertility treatment, or wanting support with their cycle and general wellbeing during what can be a very emotional time.

You do not need to have the perfect words or explain everything neatly. We start with where you are and work gently from there.

If fertility is the main reason you are coming, book an initial acupuncture appointment and mention this during your consultation.

Follow-up appointments

After your first appointment, we’ll talk about what may be useful next.

Some people come weekly for a while, especially if they are working with something specific. Others come more occasionally for maintenance, stress support or general wellbeing.

Regular treatment is often easier to manage through our affordable multi-bed acupuncture sessions.

Multi-bed acupuncture

Multi-bed acupuncture is a more affordable way to have regular treatment.

Several people are treated in the same calm room at the same time, while still receiving individual care. Once your needles are in, you rest quietly while another person is treated.

An initial one-to-one appointment is usually recommended before joining multi-bed sessions, so we can take a full case history and understand what you need.

Other techniques

Depending on what is appropriate for you, treatment may also include acupressure, auricular acupuncture, cupping or moxibustion.

These will always be discussed with you first.

Which appointment should I book?
If you are new to Norwich Acupuncture Rooms, please book an initial acupuncture appointment first.

This gives us enough time to take a full case history, understand what you would like support with, and tailor the treatment properly.

After that, we can talk about whether follow-up acupuncture, multi-bed acupuncture or another type of appointment would suit you best.
