FAQs

What happens at my first appointment?

During the first consultation the acupuncturist will diagnose the energetic imbalance by first taking a full medical history, followed by a physical examination, which includes pulse and tongue diagnosis. Dignity and patient confidentiality is maintained throughout the initial diagnosis and subsequent treatments.

What happens during a treatment?

Based on your initial consultation, the acupuncturist makes a diagnosis and puts together your personal treatment plan. Acupuncture points are selected according to your symptoms as well as your underlying energy pattern.

Will it hurt?

People are often put off experiencing the benefits of acupuncture because of the use of needles, however the insertions are typically painless ranging from tingling, warmth, or dull ache sensations.  Shonishin or no needle treatment is also available and is especially good for treating babies, children and adults if requested.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is considered safe when performed by an experienced, well-trained practitioner using sterile needles. All our practitioners are registered with a UK regulatory body for the practice of traditional acupuncture, ensuring the highest quality and standards including clean needle technique. The needles used are single-use, sterile and disposable.

Are there any side effects?

Responses to treatment can sometimes include mild tiredness, and very occasionally minor bruising may occur, a sense of wellbeing is often experienced.

How will I feel?

As acupuncture is about re-balancing the body’s energy, you may well feel a sense of relaxation, calmness and wellbeing after treatment.

How does a multi-bed setting work?

You are treated in the same room as other people, but have the privacy of your own bed and treatment space. During your allotted time slot you are treated by your acupuncturist then left to relax with your needles in for 30- 40 minutes. Your needles will then be removed and you are free to leave the clinic. Clothes are only removed if access is required to a certain area. If you are asked to remove clothing, you will be offered a blanket to protect your privacy and help undressing if required.

How is my privacy maintained within a multi-bed setting?

All patient notes remain confidential and are only shared between practitioners with your permission. It is recommended that your first consultation be in a private one to one session, where you will be asked an in-depth history and any concerns about your treatment can be addressed. While we try to offer as much privacy as possible, in a multi-bed setting this may not always be possible.

Is it safe to have acupuncture when I am pregnant?

Rebecca is experienced in treating pregnant women and has continued in Continual Professional Development in this area. If you have any concerns, you are welcome to discuss your treatment before hand and you will only be treated when you feel fully informed.

How many sessions will I need?

Frequency and number of sessions depend on your individual condition. Your acupuncturist will normally ask to see you once or twice a week at first. Some change is usually felt within five or six treatments, although occasionally just one or two treatments are sufficient. Some people choose to have regular acupuncture to maintain good health.

Should I notify my doctor before treatment?

If you have been prescribed medication we recommend you tell your doctor that you are planning to have acupuncture. Do not stop taking your medication. You should always tell your acupuncturist about any medication and supplements you are taking as this may affect your response to the acupuncture treatment. We may refer you to your GP if we consider it appropriate.

What can it do for me?

Some people turn to acupuncture for help with a specific symptom or condition. Others choose to have treatment to help maintain good health, as a preventive measure, or simply to improve their general sense of wellbeing. Because traditional acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms in isolation, it can be effective for a range of conditions. Many people return to acupuncture again and again because they find it so beneficial and relaxing.
