Sleep and Relaxation

Acupuncture to aid sleep and Relaxation

In the Community Norwich Acupuncture Room we see many people who have problems when it comes to relaxation and sleep.

When a person comes to us for help with sleep we assess the reason why they are having difficulties in the first place, searching for possible causes such as pain, stress, menopausal symptoms, depression, constitutional imbalance, light sleeper etc. We do this by examining any patterns in a person’s sleep behavior. This gives us clues as to which organ imbalances are present on an energetic level. We then know which acupuncture points to treat to help the sleep return to a normal pattern.

We assess the following symptoms in a person who has a sleep disharmony:

  • difficulty to get off to sleep
  • vivid dreams
  • waking up in the early hours and not able to get back off
  • waking up several times to urinate
  • waking up feeling hot or irritable
  • waking up in pain
  • busy mind

These individual symptoms lead us to a very intricate form of investigation. Part of this individual assessment includes Traditional Chinese Medicine Pulse and Tongue diagnosis, (which has been used for thousands of years to give information about the internal balance of the body).

When we have enough evidence of a pattern of disharmony within the body, we choose specific points with certain functions to help the individual reason for sleep related concerns. The point Heart 7 (Chinese name: Shen Men) for example at the wrist crease helps people get off to sleep by calming the mind (Shen meaning mind).

We are also trained to assess and give lifestyle advice as well, did you know that caffeine stays in your system for up to 7 hours!!!!

Often sleep complaints are the reason why people are seeking acupuncture treatment but all too often we see sleep problems as part of a secondary complaint as well. Pain for example often wakes people, then once awake it can be difficult to get back off to sleep.

Acupuncture works for pain relief by increasing the natural bodily endorphins. This has been proven in Western Medicine and is now recommended by the NICE guidelines for certain chronic conditions such as lower back pain and tension type headaches.

Endorphins are the natural “feel good” chemicals, which as well as helping pain can also help us, relax.

Over and over again in the Norwich Acupuncture Room we hear our patients commenting how relaxed they feel after a session of acupuncture only today one of my patients called it a sanctuary. Acupuncture really does have that ability to treat specific complaints as well as aid general relaxation. Don’t take my word for it give it a go and see for yourself.
