Acupressure & Shonishin

What is acupressure?

Using finger pressure on key acu points around the body, acupressure aims to stimulate the body’s natural self-curative abilities. It can be particularly supportive for relieving pain, balancing the body’s energy and helping to maintain good health. Acupressure can also help to support the reduction of muscular tension, increase circulation and enable deep relaxation.

Many people choose acupressure as an alternative to acupuncture, with a treatment that works on the same principles but without the use of needles. Acupressure therapy can also be taught to help you self-treat. These techniques are easy to learn, simple to use and a great way to focus on your own health and wellbeing.

Our team also use acupressure to support optimum fertility and during the early stages of pregnancy, as well as teaching couples and family members how to use acupressure techniques during labour for pain relief.

Acupressure massage can be particularly effective for:

  • Relieving pain of conditions such as backache, neck stiffness and arthritis
  • Conditions that encompass the whole system such as chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia
  • Helping you to cope with stress and day to day pressures, helping to release physical tension, achieve deep relaxation and restore vitality for overall wellbeing
  • Maintenance of good health by strengthening the immune system and boosting the body’s resistance to disease
  • Labour pain relief.

Shonishin – no needle acupuncture for babies and children

Shonishin is a no needle treatment designed specifically for babies and children, although suitable for use with any age group. This style of treatment was developed in Osaka, Japan in the 17th century and still remains the main modality in pediatric health care throughout the country.

Specialised tools are used to massage, tap or brush over the acupuncture pathways of the body. Many children describe it as a tickling or nice sensation on their skin, and it is often a very fun and relaxing experience for the child.

Like traditional acupuncture, Shonishin can be used to support a wide variety of health issues, or as a preventative method of health care to support general wellbeing.
